PROGRAM NOTE:

Riga Tracks - a performative audio-guide

- WALL SEX
- HOLODECK, PLEASE
- INTEGRATION IS AN ACT
- DANCE THE VENTILATOR

These are 4 titles out of the 9 RIGA TRACKS, a collection of audio-guide- and score-pieces for open headphone, mp3-device, a book and you, the audience-who-is-the-performer-who-is-the-audience.

The pieces are independent from each other; there is no need to run through the entire Riga Tracks in one go. Still, the dramaturgy from one to the other offers a meta-perspective, showing a complex manifest of audio-guidance.

The Riga Tracks are as much tailored to specific places as they are generic.
The guide is on tour since 2013, always being adapted in each city. In the same time some of the tracks are easy to do in what-ever city. The audio files and the score-book are available at this website.

Riga Tracks approaches listening as a performative act.
In a mix of actions and contemplations, the potential of headphone-pieces, their technology as well as their social connotations, is challenged into various set-ups.

Next to an extensive use of site-specific field-recordings, the tour also contains references to Bruce Nauman’s ‘Body Pressure’ and Vali Export's ‘Body Configurations’, as well as Guy Debord's psycho-geography blended with the Versailles scores of Louis XIV,.

For an interview about the concepts behind this work:

some instructions from the score book:

•  Put the headphones on and play TRACK 2.2.
•  Touch the wall with both hands at different heights.
•  When the sound gets consistent, run your hands lightly along the wall, making soft and irregular curves and turns.
(extract from WALL SEX)

•  Lay headphones on the ground in front of you and stare at them.
•  Start TRACK and slowly hunker down and caress the headphones.
(extract from KEEP-UP)

•  Keep humming softly.
•  Step almost in slow motion out of the street back into the shopping zone.
(extract from DANCE THE TRANSFORMER)
