intro-active audio guide for Z33/Hasselt
walk with headphones and drumstick

EXPERIENTIAL AUDIO GUIDE FOR A WALK IN THE CITY OF HASSELT

This sound trip sends you into the urban wilderness with open headphones, 8 sound files, a map and a drum stick.

  • The piece takes place in Hasselt, Belgium.
  • You need a pair of open headphones (or the option for 'ambient sound').
  • For a PDF of the map, scroll down.
  • Stream or download the sound-files.
  • Get yourself a mallet, which is a drum stick with a rubber ball. Not too soft.

A voice guides you through an “intro-active” journey with sound manipulations, self-performance tasks and micro-choreographies.

You walk though the city centre and along a future tram line. You hit on Hasselt, deep dive in a parking lot and applaud yourself in a tunnel. You ignore a military monument and act in a skate park.

Back at the starting point, you are changed - transformed by the new relationships that you have established with your environment.

Don’t see the city with different eyes, see your eyes through a different city. Hear your ears through different voices.

Be surprised by your new superpowers. They let you hear what’s silently in front of you, and make you feel what was not meant to be touched.

This piece exists in English and in Dutch. Here the English version.

The pieces are designed and composed for (open) headphones in public spaces and this is how they work best.
Still, feel free to have a listen here on the site.

Please know, this tracks miss two major voices:
The ever changing sounds of the environments, where the work takes place and, most important, the sounds by the self-performing listener, produced with a drum stick, claps, hums and breath.

Anyone listening to these tracks in other places than indicated on the map, please try to imagine the missing voices. And maybe even try the tasks and scores mentioned in the tracks nevertheless. Much fun!
